Lantern clock by Thomas Milles in Shoe Lane, Ca 1665.

Part of the Mills family of clockmakers , this is one of only seven or eight surviving Lantern clocks by Thomas, a fine maker. It has been altered to strike the half hours through the train rather than passing strike as originally conceived. It has evidently been in France for some period of it’s life by the style of the work when it was converted from Balance to Verge. A very interesting clock and a real window on horology through the centuries. His brother Humphrey worked in Edinburgh around this time. An example of his work is shown on our website too.
