Rare 17th Century Lantern Clock.
This is a wonderful example of provincial Lantern clock making at its best. At the same time it is a perfect example of 17th century technological advancement .
The strike train is laid out exactly as one would see on an early 17th century clock (with the hammer and spring on the right) and so consequently we might expect it to be a Balance controlled escapement.
In this case however it was conceived as a Lantern clock with an early Verge escapement using the same typical top potence position as a balance. The spring for the hammer which is filed and tapered alongside an equally well finished hammer counter is almost identical to a known example by Richard Beck made 35 years earlier.
Keeping up with the latest escapement design it was fitted in the eighteenth century with an Anchor escapement which has no doubt contributed to its survival as a useful asset in a household.
This clock still has its original steel hand which one could fairly describe as exceptional.
The dial plate is engraved in a vernacular style showing Foliage and flowers alongside other symbols emblematic of the period. Overall it has a superb colour and patination as does the rest of the frame and bell stand.
A rare and interesting clock displaying the progression of ideas in the 17th century and the only example I have seen in this configuration.
