A refined early Victorian drop dial wall clock by Patrick of Greenwich, housed in a well-figured mahogany case of elegant proportion. The trunk is gently curved to the wall, with a matching curved locking door inset to the front, the whole outlined with a fine ebony line inlay. This restrained decorative treatment imparts an earlier Regency sensibility, lending the piece a quiet architectural balance that distinguishes it from the more assertive mid-Victorian examples.
The 12-inch cream painted dial is boldly signed PATRICK of GREENWICH in confident block capitals. A pair of neatly cut steel spade hands indicate the time against clear Roman numerals, with an offset winding position. The dial is set within a cast brass bezel and narrow mahogany surround, maintaining the clock’s crisp and purposeful character.
Behind the dial lies a well-constructed single fusee movement of eight-day duration. The plates are attractively shaped and united by turned pillars, with a substantial pendulum suspension block supporting a long brass pendulum. The layout is typical of quality London-area production of the period, prioritising stability, accurate timekeeping, and ease of servicing.
Clocks by Patrick of Greenwich are comparatively uncommon, and this example—retaining its harmonious proportions and understated Regency-influenced detailing—represents an appealing and honest specimen of early Victorian domestic horology.
