A fine mahogany cased drop dial wall clock by James Tupman of London, dating to circa 1830. The case is of excellent proportion, the slender trunk terminating in a gently curved base, the whole enriched by a delicate brass line inlay running the perimeter of the border. To either side, crisply carved fan-shaped ears lend the piece a refined architectural presence, their sharp definition indicative of quality cabinet work consistent with Bloomsbury production in the late Regency period.
The 12-inch convex cream painted dial is neatly signed for the maker and framed by a turned brass bezel. The convex dial, popularised in London in the first decades of the 19th century, provides both visual depth and improved legibility, particularly when viewed at an angle in a domestic interior.
Behind the dial is a timepiece fusee movement of eight-day duration, regulated by a long brass pendulum. Altogether, a refined and well-balanced London drop dial from an established Bloomsbury maker, representative of the capital’s superior standards of workmanship during the 1830 period.
