A fine Edinburgh longcase clock of exceptional colour and patination, this distinguished example by Henry Redpath reflects the assured confidence of late eighteenth-century Scottish craftsmanship.
The hood is surmounted by a gracefully shaped swan-neck pediment inset with delicate boxwood frets, terminating in cast brass paterae that provide a crisp architectural finish. Beneath, the trunk door rises to an elegant ogee curve and is flanked by a pair of fluted columns capped with finely turned mahogany capitals. These details lend a pleasing vertical emphasis, accentuating the slender proportions of the trunk before it descends into a rectangular base raised on bracket feet.
The 12-inch arched silvered dial is profusely engraved with stylised foliage of confident execution. A subsidiary seconds ring is set within the matted centre, while a circular date aperture is neatly integrated into an engraved ribbon bearing the maker’s name. In the arch, a strike/silent ring is indicated by a beautifully designed steel pointer — a refined and practical feature typical of quality Edinburgh production.
Altogether, this is a clock of strong presence yet balanced proportion — its rich patination and crisp engraving combining to create a piece that sits comfortably amongst the better output of the Scottish capital.
