Henry Baker was a provincial Kentish maker working in Malling during the late 17th and early 18th century, active approximately 1695–1730. His surviving clocks demonstrate the steady transmission of London practice into the provinces at a time when regional makers were establishing distinct but highly competent traditions. The present posted-frame example is of 30-hour duration with anchor escapement — a configuration that, by circa 1720, reflects the firm establishment of pendulum regulation in everyday domestic clocks. The posted construction, with its corner pillars uniting the movement, is typical of honest provincial manufacture: practical, robust, and intended for reliability rather than ornament alone.
The break-arch dial is finely engraved around the cartouche bearing Baker’s name, with decorative work continuing into the spandrel areas surrounding the chapter ring. The engraving shows a confident hand, suggesting either a skilled local engraver or dial supplier servicing the Kent/Sussex region. Time is indicated by the original cut steel hand — a detail of considerable importance, as such survivals often suffer replacement over three centuries of use. Altogether, this is a well-preserved and representative early 18th-century provincial clock, demonstrating the steady technical refinement of the period while retaining the practical character expected of a 30-hour hooded wall clock.
