A fine late 17th-century Bristol-area lantern clock, the exceptional case dating from the 1690s and now housing a Victorian quarter-striking spring-driven movement fitted in the late 19th century.
The case displays the outstanding craftsmanship for which Bristol-area makers of the period are celebrated, exhibiting finely executed proportions and detailing, particularly the fine turning of the finials and feet, which are characteristic of the region. The engraved dial and surround also demonstrate the distinctive artistry associated with Bristol workmanship, for which they were renowned. The frame is surmounted by the classic pierced Lion and Unicorn frets emblematic of the area.
Although the original movement has been replaced, the Victorian upgrading of the clock—undertaken to a notably high standard during the 1880s—has ensured the preservation and continued practical use of this important early case. Such a conversion would have represented a considerable expense at the time, reflecting the esteem in which the piece was held.
The Victorian movement is spring-driven, eight-day duration and strikes the quarters on two bells.
