Crossthwaite & Hodges, Mahogany Cased Pad-Top – Circa 1775

£9,500.00

A fine Georgian mahogany bracket clock, made by Crossthwaite & Hodges, London dating to around 1775. It represents the best craftsmanship of late Georgian London clockmaking. The firm of Crossthwaite & Hodges operated in the second half of the 18th century, producing high-quality domestic clocks in fashionable cases for a discerning clientele. The pad-top form, with its restrained lines and flame-mahogany veneers, was particularly popular in the 1760s and 1770s,

This example has a particularly fine backplate which is beautifully engraved and retains an unspoilt aged Lacquer finish.

The period was one of technical refinement in English clockmaking, and in this case it has a form of tic-tac escapement. It is also provided with a concentric date ring with a brass pointer to the silvered dial centre and a Rise and Fall adjustment in the break arch. The twin dial in the arch provides Strike Silent  for the bell strike should you wish to switch it off at night.

Crossthwaite & Hodges belonged to a generation of London makers who upheld the city’s reputation as the world’s leading centre for precision timekeeping before the industrial expansion of the 19th century.
