Benbow of London
An interesting miniature longcase standing just 66in tall with an 8in square dial. It is signed Benbow London 1812. The general style would suggest a date of the late 18th century and indeed a Thomas Benbow is listed working in Carnaby Street at the very end of the 18th century. A bit of an enigma then, as cannot be certain if this is a number or a date.
The movement is of a design similar to the work of James Ferguson, circa 1775, with a two wheel going train comprising a centre/great wheel and an escape wheel with 90 teeth. Regulation is by a pendulum 4ft in length. The strike side is also to an unusual design, incorporating rack striking on a bell.
It is contained in a beautifully figured small mahogany case with architecture pediment.
